St George-based Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) extension agronomist Stuart Pilcher says the trials are seeking viable rotation crop options and crop data specific to the north west NSW and south west Queensland crop production areas... Mr Pilcher said there were considerable time and cost savings and logistical benefits from locating the trials at one site... The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has thrown its funding support behind the trials following a regional visit by the GRDC Northern Panel last year...

The latest climate tool - the Predictive Ocean Atmosphere Model for Australia (POAMA) or, as it is more commonly known, BoM's new seasonal climate outlook, is a state-of-the-art system to predict climate up to a whole season ahead... Unlike the previous statistical climate model, which used past history to guide the outlook, the dynamical model combines actual physics of the atmosphere, oceans, land and ice to calculate climate conditions over Australia for the coming three months... Dr Watkins says POAMA provides better forecasts in autumn than the old statistical model: "Autumn has traditionally been called a 'predictability barrier' by the forecasters because the Pacific Ocean, particularly those regions where El Ni o and La Ni a tend to form or decay, has less influence on our climate at this time," he says...

In one project partnered by BCG (formerly the Birchip Cropping Group), 10 farming systems groups across Victoria, NSW, South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia and Queensland are trialling practical measures aimed at minimising the impact of climate change on farm viability... The specific objectives of the NAMI initiative are to: directly involve farmers and advisers in designing on-ground demonstrations of locally relevant adaptations to climate change to maintain or improve farm viability; assist rapid dissemination of information about adapting to and mitigating climate change; assess the greenhouse gas emission implications of different farming practices; demonstrate practices that could reduce net greenhouse gas emissions from nitrous oxide and methane as well as increase soil carbon sequestration; and increase awareness and knowledge in the grains industry of the viability of greenhouse gas mitigation strategies and demonstrate how to put them into practice... GRDC managing director Peter Reading says the initiative will help equip primary producers with the tools to adapt and adjust to the impact of climate change and manage greenhouse gas emissions - two issues that have been identified as key 'drivers for change' in the industry to 2012 and beyond...
