Kojonup farmers Tim Mathwin and Daniel Simpson epitomise the new generation of high-rainfall zone growers: young, emerging from grazing backgrounds, and with an eye to the potential their land has for high-yielding, high-quality grain crops... Ms Hill says the Great Southern"s highrainfall cropping zone, which has an average annual rainfall of 450 to 750 millimetres and longer growing seasons, creates the potential for typical yields to be as high as eight tonnes a hectare for cereals and three to four tonnes a hectare for canola - about double the current averages...

Five, one-year trials investigating non-wetting soils, and management tools to address them, are taking place in the western part of the Kwinana port zone after receiving funding from the GRDC... "The networks were established under the Rural Cropping Solutions (RCS) initiative, which is part of a renewed effort by the GRDC to reduce the time it takes for new varieties, practices and technologies to be adopted, with the ultimate aim being to increase the profitability of the Australian grains industry," he said... "In 2015-16, the GRDC has invested more than $1 million to date into projects addressing issues raised at RCSN meetings across the western region," he says... Ms Hill says in mid-2016 each group plans to hold an open meeting for consultation with other growers and industry stakeholders across their port zone and to provide all growers with an opportunity to raise issues of concern...
