To maintain grain quality and to select the correct treatments, identify pests early by sampling monthly... Note that temperatures that influence life cycle and breeding relate to stored grain and not air temperature... Khapra beetle ( Trogoderma granarium ) is an exotic pest that has the highest potential impact on the value of stored grain if they were to establish in Australia...

Store carefully to protect grain value.. "As we have both summer and winter harvests, and most growers hold their own planting seed, there is rarely a time when growers have no grain being held on-farm," says senior development agronomist with the Queensland Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) Philip Burrill... "Monitoring, hygiene and aeration won't solve all your problems, but growers who do these three things regularly and well, backed up by good records, will only need to fumigate for pests about once in every three years," he says...

Silos that allow efficient aeration are essential for maintaining grain quality in on-farm storage... "As we have both summer and winter harvests, and most growers hold their own planting seed, there is rarely a time when growers have no grain being held on-farm," says senior development agronomist with the Queensland Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) Philip Burrill... A National Grain Storage Extension project, funded by the GRDC, is working towards making decisions easier for growers about which storage methods are best for different circumstances, which pests to watch out for, and how best to store grain in different regions...

Each female beetle lays 40-280 eggs during its lifetime, dropping them loosely among the foodstuff or inserting them into the crevice of a grain kernel... The development from egg to adult takes up to 3 weeks under optimal conditions of 33 C and 80% relative humidity... Good hygiene with storage and handling equipment should minimise infection...
