new pathotype

Catalogue: Ground Cover
It can be reported that no new pathotypes of wheat stem rust, wheat leaf rust, barley leaf rust or oat stem rust have been detected to date... Cultivar responses are not expected to change... It was less common in northern NSW; the pathotype associated with LongReach LincolnA (64 E0 A-) has been recovered at low frequency, but does not appear to have had an adverse effect on LongReach LincolnA and BolacA during the season; and the 'Yr17-27' pathotype was first reported in October (Cereal Rust Report, Volume 8, Issue 7, available at http://sydney.edu.au/agriculture/plant_breeding_institute/cereal_rust/reports_forms.shtml )...

Of the three rust diseases affecting wheat crops, leaf rust is often overlooked because it is thought to be less damaging than stem rust and stripe rust... The new pathotype found in WA last year has a DNA fingerprint identical to isolates of the '76 group' from eastern Australia, clearly showing it has spread from east to west in Australia... Some wheat varieties, such as King Rock , Fortune and Zippy , have additional leaf rust resistance that is expected to remain effective, meaning a lesser shift in their resistance ratings from moderately resistant (MR) to MS. LongReach Cobra , Mace and Carnamah varieties have shown varying responses to the new pathotype, so further tests are underway to more accurately determine how they might react...

Every year since 1919 staff at the University of Sydney have monitored Australian cereal rust populations using samples of rusted plant material collected throughout Australia... The most likely explanation is that the new pathotype has come to Australia from another wheat-growing region... In September 2014 the new pathotype was found in leaf rust samples collected from Mount Hope on the Eyre Peninsula ( Wyalkatchem ) and Moonta ( Axe ) and Port Broughton ( Corack ) on the Yorke Peninsula...

The discovery of a new pathotype overcoming the resistance gene Yr17 has been widely reported since the first announcement, just before Christmas 2006... What we don't know: the expected response of Yr17 varieties - this can only be determined in field experiments in the 2007 season and data will be made available as it comes on line, hopefully in early to mid-spring; where, or if, the new pathotype will survive summer, and in what quantities; and whether the new pathotype will establish in the first season - or whether it will take several seasons to become frequent in the pathogen population... Rust sports readily adhere to clothing... Two further changes in cereal rust pathogen populations have been detected, both in Western Australia... A new pathotype of the barley leaf rust pathogen ( Puccinia hordei ) was detected in WA, based on samples collected in September at Boxwood Hill, Chillinup, Esperance, Kamballup and South Stirling in the state's southern region...
