Previous research conducted by the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia established that blackspot of field pea (Mycosphaerella pinodes) is producing windborne ascospores through out the season... Eighty nine different grain legume lines; 22 desi chickpea, nine kabuli chickpea, 10 faba bean, 15 lentil, seven lupin and 26 field pea were evaluated under irrigated conditions at Medina Research Station in 2003...

Contrary to initial expectations outlined in the project specification document, our best results have been obtained in chickpea... With GRDC support we have undertaken the ambitious goal of developing DH protocols for chickpea and field pea... As part of our multi-faceted approach we have also trialled anther culture, with good success in the development of somatic embryos and roots from anther-derived callus in chickpea and good induction of callus from anthers of field pea...

" Date: 11.05.2010 Field Peas - Field Performance and Role in Northern Farming Systems field peas fig1 Steve Moore - University of Sydney Plant Breeding Institute The University of Sydney's field pea efforts consist of two components: 1) A fully autonomous breeding program for the northern region funded by Pork CRC charged with developing adapted field pea varieties to produce a reliable and locally grown protein source for the pork industry in the northern region 2) A yield evaluation node of the field pea section of Pulse Breeding Australia... It is recognised that in order for field pea to become a viable pulse alternative in the northern region, returns to grain growers must be competitive with other pulses grown in the north... Current status of the breeding program and experimental data Released varieties Two field pea varieties bred and selected for commercial production in the northern region have been released through projects funded by the Pork CRC. Yarrum , (dun seeded), was released in 2005 and Maki, (blue) was released in 2009...

Nitrogen-fixation index set to help growers.. Research funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) will lead to the development of an index of the nitrogen-fixation capacity of field peas to assist growers with their cultivar selections... SARDI researcher Dr Elizabeth Farquharson says the work being undertaken through the GRDC's southern region Optimising Nitrogen Fixation project is aiming to improve understanding of how cultivars differ in their N-fixation potential, clarifying where legumes respond to inoculation, identifying key agronomic factors affecting fixation and testing new inoculants...

New pulse varieties with improvements in adaptation to low rainfall environments are now available BUT sound crop and paddock selection along with correct and timely agronomic management practices are still essential to reduce production risks... It is important that growers follow standard pulse management guidelines for the crop and variety chosen... Lentil and chickpea growers in particular can benefit from on farm storage as it can assist in attaining the highest price for grain in some seasons and allow crops with poor quality issues (poor colour, wrinkled seed) or contaminants to be harvested quickly and stored until appropriate cleaning and marketing can occur...
