micronutrients

Catalogue: Ground Cover
It is a simple fact that micronutrients (or trace elements) are only needed by crops and pastures in small amounts, but they play a major part in maximising production... Early identification of what is missing in the paddock is a key part of effective farm management, scientist Dr Nigel Wilhelm says... New research into national micronutrient deficiencies, supported by the GRDC and overseen by Dr Wilhelm's team from the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), has been examining tactics for detecting and managing trace-element deficiencies in crops...

Image of Nigel Wilhelm inspecting a young oat plant.. Growers should not rely on visible signs of micronutrient deficiencies in crops as symptoms of the most common micronutrient issues are vague and inconsistent... Zinc seed dressings are effective and will supply zinc to the young crop but cannot completely overcome a severe deficiency, nor will they provide benefit in subsequent years...

This year's good early rains, followed by a mid-late autumn and early winter drought in many areas will impact on the expression of crop nutrient deficiencies at different stages of the growing season, highlighting the need for careful monitoring, diagnosis and treatment... Prof Bell says the trial results highlight the importance of testing to a depth of 30cm when soils are at levels considered to be K deficient for cereals to improve predictions of crop response from adding K... Results from the research were presented at recent K seminars held in Northam, Katanning and Albany, supported by GRDC and the Belgium-based Sulfate of Potash Information Board...
