Control the seeds to control the weeds.. Effective weed management in productive cropping systems is reliant on preventing viable seed entering the seedbank... "Growers are advised to use an integrated weed management strategy as the most effective method of controlling problem weeds," Dr Widderick says...

Trials underline value of reducing weed seeds at harvest.. Trials across south eastern Australia have demonstrated the importance of targeting weed seeds at harvest to reduce the prevalence of weeds in cropping systems... Evaluation of three harvest weed seed control systems - chaff carts, windrow burning and the Harrington Seed Destructor (HSD) - has shown that all three systems are similarly effective in reducing the emergence of annual ryegrass and the control of herbicide resistant populations...

There has been a seismic shift in farming practices over the past 20 years driven by our desire to better manage soil, preserve and utilise soil moisture, improve operational efficiencies and boost crop production... Improving the ecology, structure and productivity of our soils is an important consideration within the farming system at Windy Station... Organic matter helps improve the retention of moisture and nutrients in the soil and is a key part of maintaining optimal crop productivity over the longer term...

"All three systems - chaff carts, windrow burning and the HSD - target the chaff fraction during harvest and if they are all working efficiently then they will produce the same result.".. At 13 locations across the southern cropping region during the 2011 harvest, the HSD was evaluated alongside chaff cart and narrow windrow burning systems for its ability to reduce annual ryegrass emergence in the following growing season...
