Grain growers can use a testing service to determine if insecticide resistance exists in redlegged earth mites on their properties... Growers in the southern grains region are encouraged to use a free redlegged earth mite (RLEM) insecticide-resistance testing service made possible through a national GRDC-funded project led by the University of Melbourne, in collaboration with cesar , the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA), CSIRO and the University of WA... Resistance to synthetic pyrethroids (SPs) is already confirmed in large populations of RLEM across the WA grainbelt, while some populations in WA also have resistance to organophosphates (OPs)...

With winter crop harvest fast approaching, growers are being urged to take weed seed samples to help map out an effective weed management strategy for the upcoming season... Taking seed samples from survivor weeds at harvest and sending them off for testing will allow growers to assess their control options for next year," Mr Street said... "Herbicide resistance costs the northern grains industry tens of millions of dollars each year and unless growers understand the resistance status of the weeds on their farm, they can't have full confidence that their normal control measures will continue to work in the future."..

Ryegrass and sow thistle were evaluated in this project; other weeds such as wild oats, wild radish, mustards, poppy, etc. are also developing resistance in this region... The aim of the project was to capture the current resistance status of a large sample of ryegrass and sow thistle; to key pre-emergent and post emergent herbicides in the western riverina region of SW NSW... What was very interesting was the level of resistance measured in samples with no expected resistance...

Wild radish has developed resistance to many herbicide modes of action... Populations resistant to glyphosate have recently been confirmed... An autumn tickle can be conducted using a range of equipment including tyned implements, skim ploughs, heavy harrows, pinwheel (stubble) rakes, dump rakes and disc chains...

Mr Clark says growers could face production falls of 20 per cent if glyphosate resistance reaches a level where tillage becomes a regular part of the farming system once more... "GRDC has funded a major new five-year research project on integrated weed management (IWM) for northern region weeds to follow-on from the current projects on herbicide resistance, fleabane control and delivering applied solutions in central Queensland," Mr Clark said... An excellent time to monitor for glyphosate resistance is after plants have been treated with glyphosate under ideal conditions as this is a time when a large majority of susceptible plants will die and any resistant individuals are more obvious, he said...

The samples were from weeds present at last year's harvest so were most likely to have survived herbicide application and have some herbicide resistance - it really defines the worst case scenario."..

University of Adelaide scientists mapping the extent of herbicide resistance in annual ryegrass across southern Australia's high-rainfall zone (HRZ) have concluded that pre-emergent herbicide use is essential... The GRDC-supported research, involving varying weather patterns, topography and soil types, indicates options such as Sakura plus Avadex Xtra or Sakura followed by Boxer Gold post-emergent can provide effective control of annual ryegrass in the HRZ... The university's research included random farm surveys across south-eastern Australia to map ryegrass herbicide resistance in the HRZ, and the findings from these surveys will be incorporated into a new national resistance-mapping tool developed by Bayer (see Weed resistance maps help navigate herbicide options )...
