plant available nitrogen

Western Australian grain growers may need to consider adjusting 2014 nitrogen fertiliser strategies due to the influence of high stubble loads and a dry summer and autumn on plant available nitrogen in the soil... Mr Ryan suggested growers use these results and assess stubble loads to determine if additional fertiliser was required, and consider adjusting their nitrogen application method at seeding time or using split (separate) nitrogen applications which could decrease any risk of low nitrogen availability... "Knowing your current soil nitrogen status; stubble density; stubble quality (including the amount of nitrogen relative to carbon); and soil moisture content can help you manage fertiliser applications and rates to ensure that adequate nitrogen is supplied to the crop," he said...

Ms Serafin says the research showed that applying high rates of urea to sunflowers in waterlogged conditions caused a decline in the crop's oil content... There was no yield benefit from additional applications of nitrogen.".. "Maintaining adequate water supply until the crop reaches physical maturity has the potential to optimise yields based on research by C.L. Browne at Leeton, NSW, in the 1970s," Ms Serafin says. "..

Specific management practices alter the abundance and activity of microbes capable of processing both organic and mineral-N... Once we better understand the soil biological and chemical factors governing N-transformations in our agricultural systems, we can determine how agronomic practices can be used to synchronise N supply, from both fertiliser and soil sources, with crop demand... A primary goal of this project was to develop and use molecular tools to detect these N-cycling communities in Australian agricultural systems...

Measurements are expressed as millimetres of plant-available water per metre of soil profile, for example, 150mm/m, or as a total for the soil that takes into consideration the depth of the soil profile... When summer weeds are controlled, increases in plant-available water (PAW) at sowing significantly increase the percentage of years when above-average yields are obtained... Many southern and western region paddocks still have quite a few years of glyphosate use before problems arise...

Victorian grower Leigh Bryan says VRA has resulted in "massive" savings on his farm at Swan Hill, Victoria, and enabled him to treat soils how they need to be treated... Leigh, who farms 2400ha comprising wheat, barley, canola, lentils and field peas, is entering his tenth season using VRA after converting his spur gear drive seeder to an electric drive in 2005... Leigh also has his boomspray set up for VRA, but he says using the technology with liquids is more difficult than using it with granules because of the pressure ranges...
