Heads up on crown rot tolerance.. New crown rot analysis funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has taken a closer look at tolerance ratings in current and future wheat cultivars with positive results... Mr Long says there is value in the current resistance system but also potential to adopt tolerance ratings that would be very useful to growers and advisers...

3. Last season's crop - The user selects from a drop-down list the crop that was last grown in the paddock and inserts the yield, protein (in the case of bread wheat, durum and barley) and amount of fertiliser N applied... As already mentioned, grain yields are calculated on the basis of WUEs with the amount of water available to the crop estimated from recent and historical rainfall records and, in some cases, push-probe testing... Potential grain yields for the other crops were calculated by multiplying the potential wheat yields by constants - 1.05 for durum, 1.33 for barley, 0.50 for canola, 0.64 for chickpea and 0.80 for fababean...

CSIRO researcher Dr Zvi Hochman has explored the potential for northern grain growers to increase wheat yields by 1.2 tonnes per hectare using best practice embodying current technologies and varieties suited to individual farming systems... Speaking at the GRDC Grains Research Update in Coonabarabran, New South Wales, Dr Hochman said the key to achieving such a yield lift was using best practice to help achieve water-limited yields, instead of actual yields... To help bridge the yield gap, Dr Hochman advocates tailoring best practice to individual farming systems, with a focus on using the "best-adapted crop varieties and best cropping and land management practices for a given environment"...
