On Kit Leake's property at Kellerberrin, WA, CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems scientist Dr Yvette Oliver is working with the Kellerberrin Demonstration Group - part of the Grower Group Alliance - to show how yield variability across a paddock relates to plant-available water capacity... Dr Oliver, whose work is part of the GRDC's Nutrient Management Initiative, says the low-yielding site was a deep-yellow clay-sand with an acid layer at 200 millimetres and aluminium and pH toxicity and root constraints at 500mm, which combined to constrain plant-available water capacity to about 30mm... [Photo (left) by CSIRO: Kellerberrin Demonstration Group member Kit Leake explains soil constraints with Department of Agriculture and Food, WA, nutrient expert Bill Bowden (in pit), KDG chairman Scott Dixon, CSIRO's Yvette Oliver and Wallatin-Wildlife's Jessica Forsyth.] In the high-yielding site a hard pan was visible at 200mm and an acid layer was starting to develop, which would require deep-ripping and liming...
