The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is once again calling on grain growers to set aside St Patrick's Day on March 17 to assess and begin control of the green bridge of volunteer cereals... The green bridge of plants carrying rust spores into the winter crop season is a major contributor to rust incursions, according to Rohan Rainbow, GRDC senior manager plant health... Dr Rainbow says the best preventative strategies for managing the rust threat are to select rust-resistant varieties, treat seed and control the green bridge of volunteers and weeds...

Wet summers that favour the growth of volunteer wheat can provide a favourable environment for leaf rust to build up, increasing the threat of rust in the following season... Eliminating volunteer/weed wheat plants (the 'green bridge') over summer/autumn can reduce the carry over of leaf rust, and other rust inoculum, between seasons... The chances of a leaf rust epidemic are greatest following a wet summer...

Every year since 1919 staff at the University of Sydney have monitored Australian cereal rust populations using samples of rusted plant material collected throughout Australia... The most likely explanation is that the new pathotype has come to Australia from another wheat-growing region... In September 2014 the new pathotype was found in leaf rust samples collected from Mount Hope on the Eyre Peninsula ( Wyalkatchem ) and Moonta ( Axe ) and Port Broughton ( Corack ) on the Yorke Peninsula...

The back pocket guide is designed to help you identify the three wheat rust diseases by their different symptoms... Control: Sow resistant varieties; Some seed treatments control leaf rust for 8-12 weeks after sowing, but be aware of with-holding periods if the crop is intended for early grazing; Foliar sprays may suppress the disease in infected crops for three to five weeks depending on fungicide, rate and local conditions... Use good quality seed to minimise potential difficulties and be aware of with-holding periods required before stock can be safely introduced for grazing; Fungicide sprays are effective three to five weeks depending on the fungicide, rate and local conditions but are unlikely to be economic after flowering...

Stripe rust: the first rust to appear in the cropping cycle.. The approach will also ensure the control of leaf rust and stem rust... As humidity declines, the spores disperse separately and can travel greater distances, resulting in rust infection being more uniform across the crop...

The first report of wheat stripe rust for 2011 was made in early July from southern NSW, while oat crown rust and oat stem rust have been frequently observed since April in crop regrowth and weedy oat populations...
