Catalogue: GRDC Updates
Baits do kill juvenile snails... Stubble and/or green plant material reduce uptake of snail bait by juvenile snails... After three days, any remaining baits were removed and weighed to determine amount consumed and snail mortality was assessed after another five days...

Snails are in such numbers on some farms taht they have clogged up harvesting machinery... "If there is sufficient food and moisture, snails will descend from their summer resting places and may breed opportunistically," Mr Shannon says... Mr Shannon says that in addition to baiting, an integrated approach to snail control may include the following: good summer weed control; using mechanical controls, such as towing a cable or roller behind a tractor if hot, dry conditions persist; and uniform burning, which can also help to effectively control snails, but should be avoided if other options are possible...

In summary, it could be argued that none of the currently available preemergence herbicides have the required stability in efficacy to become viable alternatives to postemergence group A or imidazolinone herbicides... Overall, 2012 seasonal conditions tended to favour early and mid flowering and maturing varieties...

Time to intensify snail control measures.. "It is critical that baiting or other forms of control are activated as close as possible to a rainfall event... The workshop in Adelaide - attended by GRDC panel members and program managers, entomologists and researchers from South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, grain growers and consultants - was told that juvenile snails which survived over summer should be mature enough now to consume bait...

In addition to baiting, other practices should include: "Snails have become a very serious issue in recent seasons, causing crop damage and yield losses, clogging machinery, contaminating harvested grain and posing a risk to grain exports," Mr Shannon said...

Summer provides key opportunity for snail management.. Mallala (SA) grain grower Richard Konzag says if sufficient rainfall occurs during summer to keep the soil damp for several days, his experience shows snails will move down from posts and stubble to take the bait... Round snails lay up to double the number of eggs of pointed snails," Mr Baker said. "..

After 7 days, snails were retrieved and assessed for mortality... The pre- and post-treatment numbers of live and dead snails were estimated by collecting all snails in four 0.25 sq... It should be noted that this trial was assessed after only 7 days, so these results do not take into account potential differences in the persistence of different bait products beyond this period...

We desperately need to break the life cycle of the snails.. In desperation we began to employ numerous ways to control snails but without ever being able to break their life cycle... The last two years have been very bad for snails on our farm, but because we have concentrated on controlling snails before seeding, we have not had to rely on the Inclined Belt to deliver our canola...
