Central Queensland grower David Trevilyan reflects on a lifetime of machinery innovation... David built the machine, powered by a D9 Cat engine with 385 horsepower and 2535 newton metres of torque, between 1971 and 1975 to pull a heavy land plane he had developed to help level melon holes or gilgai (natural depressions in the soil) that covered one-third of his cropping area... Looking to the future, David is focused on fine-tuning the machines he custom builds to withstand generations of farm ownership in grains operations across the country and, increasingly, around the globe...

Australia's grains industry is entering an era of unprecedented opportunities, according to the new chair of the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Southern Regional Panel... Keith Pengilley says the opportunities - born of increasing demand for grain for human consumption and stock feed - will be particularly attractive for southern region grain growers due to their regional proximity to expanding markets and their ability to adapt to climate variability... Mr Perrett said the Panel chair vacancy generated an exceptional field of candidates, underlining the value and importance placed on the role and the contribution of the Panel to the grains industry's growth and development through the GRDC...

New GRDC research tackles return to tillage.. Dr Yash Dang, Department of Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts (DSITIA) says many grain growers are resorting to cultivation to manage problem grass weeds... Chemical: soil carbon status (including fractionating soil carbon into pools with differing lability), profile mineral nitrogen and potentially mineralisable nitrogen in labile organic fractions, phosphorus, potassium and zinc, and crop nitrogen and phosphorus uptake...

Machinery efficiency showcased in CQ.. Tour organiser Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) principal technical officer Maurice Conway said the tour primarily attracted young growers keen to employ new technologies to generate time and labour savings and maximise crop production opportunities... The disc system is now incorporating on-the-go unit downforce monitoring and adjustment, section control to shut off rows to reduce overlap, variable rate planting and fertilizer application with maps overlaid from historical yield data, soil type and observation," he said...

" Reducing the impact of pulse diseases in the northern region (incorporating DAQ00073) DAQ00108 Start Date: 01/07/2006.. The previous year, in collaboration with Pulse Australia, this project had provided many local agronomists with information on recognition of ascochyta blight at a certified chickpea agronomist course at Emerald, and a pre-season chickpea Update attended by over 70 people... Despite the focus on IDM for individual pathogen-host combinations, there is a need to understand the impact of IDM packages on a whole farming system scale on the interrelatedness between all of the plant pathogens in that system...

Early prediction of soilborne disease could cut losses.. DAFWA project leader Martin Harries said soilborne diseases were a major cost to the cropping industry, estimated to cause losses in WA of about $100 million per year in cereals alone... "There is scope to reduce these losses through management actions - such as choice of crop type or application of fungicide seed dressings - if these pathogens can be more accurately detected and quantified prior to sowing," he said...
