We used the tools to quantify the climatic risks related to farm management options such as crop rotation, sowing date, cultivar, and nitrogen management, at eight locations in SEA. During the life of the project farmers showed increasing interest in these tools so that many are now commonly in use... 16. A tool (software package) "Climate Variability Analyser" to simplify the analysis of climate variability has been produced... Significant changes were observed in shift and dispersion of the probability distribution functions for climate variables and grain yield among the SOI and SSTs phases calculated at the end of July...

The committee suggested more research is required into the measure of economic loss from GE contamination... In summary, under National Standards, organic certification in Australia means an organic farmer must have no GE inputs, grow no GE crops, and no GE presence in final product or on farm... The issue of the co-existence of these different agricultural systems has become an issue for Australian agriculture...

The marriage of science and practice will underpin debate at the 5th World Congress on Conservation Agriculture (WCCA5) to be held in Brisbane from September 26 to 30... "We have partnered with the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) to host the congress in Australia to encourage discussion and thought as to how science and practice can support more sustainable agriculture and the congress will give delegates the chance to mix with some of Australia's leading farmers," Mr Kearns said... Designed to have broad appeal to both large and small-scale producers interested in how people around the world are using conservation farming techniques and principles, the congress tackles four themes: management practices, the design of productive farming systems, achieving impact through the sharing of knowledge and informing policy development...

Australian research over 20 years has shown controlled traffic farming (CTF) can improve grain quality and increase grain yields by two to 16 per cent if there are no other limiting subsoil constraints... The Implementing a Controlled Traffic Farming Systems Fact Sheet states that CTF crops are typically higher yielding and are more resilient in very wet or very dry seasons than those with less controlled traffic systems... The Fact Sheet provides practical information on setting up a CTF crop production system, including aspects such as management zones, machinery operating widths, field layout and tillage systems...

Cropping enterprises achieve better profits when the total spent on fertiliser and chemicals as part of farm inputs is in the range of 25 - 28% of the five year average income... For intensive croppers with high cost paddocks, a 20% reduction in crop area can maintain profits while reducing production and financial risk... Profit is driven by income and costs the impact on income should be considered when changing costs. '..
