Grains research enters a new era.. The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has begun delivering on its pledge to secure the future viability of grain production in Queensland and New South Wales... With research suggesting that the majority of current farming systems are dramatically underachieving on water use efficiency, the GRDC is co-funding the innovative new project aimed at better understanding how northern farming systems can be improved to boost productivity and profitability...

Brad Jones, of Tammin, is part of a GRDC Kwinana East Regional Cropping Solutions Network project investigating key drivers of top-performing farm businesses in WA's eastern wheatbelt... "Using liquid products, we can sow up to 600ha of crop per day, which is about 100ha/day faster than we could achieve with granular fertiliser and has cut our total seeding time to about 15 days if the weather is good," he says... Brad says a range of broad-scale herbicides are used in the fallow to remove herbicide-resistant weeds to make way for dry sowing when the paddock returns to production, typically in a rotation of fallow/cereal/cereal/canola and hay/legumes...

" Facilitating increased on-farm adoption of broadleaf species in crop sequences to improve grain production and profitability.. The area sown to pulse legume crops or canola has dramatically declined in the past 8-10 years, and despite 65-70% of southern grain region still growing pastures in rotation with crops, many of these pastures tend to have low legume contents and provide little nitrogen benefit to following crops... There are many good reasons why growers have reduced the frequency of use of broadleaf species in recent years related to late starts to the growing season, drought and risk aversion...

Grower groups investigate value of broadleaf crops The value of growing pulse or brassica crops in various combinations and under different management regimes in a cereal-based cropping system is being investigated through a collaborative southern region project... The supplement outlines projects undertaken under the GRDC Crop Sequencing Initiative, which aims to help growers profitably integrate a greater range of land uses, including pastures and fallows, into their farming systems... Mr Kearns said the GRDC Crop Sequencing Initiative was established to improve understanding of the risks and benefits associated with including a broader range of crop types and end uses in the farming system...

No-till, stubble retained farming systems are rapidly being adopted to maximise crop water use... Despite the many benefits of this system, the efficacy of pre-emergent herbicides remains one of the major concerns for growers who have adopted this system, and remains a barrier.....
