Dr Kevin Moore, NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) special plant pathologist (pulses and oilseeds), Tamworth, NSW says many 2011 chickpea crops had problems with establishment and seedling disease... "More than half the seed lots were infected with Botrytis and 89 per cent were colonised by other fungi," Dr Moore said... Farmers can potentially save themselves time, effort and money by taking advantage of seed testing services now available for chickpeas... DNA testing of 36 seed lots from commercial chickpea crops identified a high incidence of genetic contamination.. Growers can minimise the risk of planting the wrong variety or a mixture of varieties by acquiring planting seed from a reputable seed supplier.. Selected results from 36 chickpea seed lots ex 2011 harvest showing the variety declared at receival, 100 seed weight and identity of each of 8 seedlings as determined by four SSR markers based on DNA profiles..

Moore Kevin Seed test Figure 1.. After 10-12 days the number of seeds from which Ascochyta rabiei (cause of Ascochyta blight), Botrytis cinerea (cause of Botrytis grey mould and Botrytis seedling disease, Botrytis%), or other fungi (Other%, saprophytes that do not normally attack healthy chickpeas but can colonise weather damaged seed) was recorded... There was no correlation between Emergence and the percentage of seed that yielded either: no fungi (Clean%, R squared = 13.4%), Botrytis (Botrytis%, R squared = 9.3%), saprophytic fungi (Other%, R squared = 3.9%) or Ascochyta (R squared = 0.0% - data not shown)...

Although Sunvale relies on the stripe rust resistance gene Yr17 it also has strong Adult Plant Resistance (APR) genes which have allowed it to remain a moderately resistant (MR) variety even to the WA Yr17+ pathotype, which has virulence for the Yr17 gene... In the remaining four seed lots, the contaminant varieties in Sunvale 9 both had Sunvale like heads with possibly a slightly more susceptible MR-MS reaction to stripe rust... The field observations also supported the marker analysis with the Sunvale 6 seed lot...

In northern New South Wales in 2008 and 2009 significant levels of stripe rust were reported in commercial Sunvale crops, a variety released in 1995 with moderate resistance (MR) to the disease... Dr Simpfendorfer says it is not surprising that high levels of impurity were found in commercial Sunvale crops given that it is a 16-year-old variety... Contamination of commercial Sunvale seed lots has introduced more stripe-rust-susceptible varieties into these crops, which is unfairly tarnishing the resistance rating of this variety and jeopardising industry confidence in stripe rust resistance breeding as a whole...
