Australian cereal growers adopting harvest weed seed control systems (HWSC) are driving down weed populations to lower levels on their farms, and extending the life of the herbicides they use... Dr Walsh said the problem of herbicide resistant weed populations globally was particularly severe in production systems where herbicide dependence resulted in a lack of weed control diversity... "Although herbicides remain the number one weed control tool in Australian cropping systems, it is now clear that the inclusion of HWSC systems in weed management programs is enabling weed populations to be driven to very low levels, providing some insurance for the sustainability of remaining herbicide resources," he said...

Strategic tillage renews on-farm profit potential.. The trials, led by Dr Yash Dang through the University of Queensland and the Queensland Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation, showed that strategic tillage has the potential to lift both grain yields and gross margins, as well as maintaining soil health... Strategic tillage targeting a suite of weeds - fleabane, sow thistle, African turnip and feathertop Rhodes grass - has also enabled the Jensens cut seeding rates...

Multiple herbicide resistance in weeds poses a bigger problem than glyphosate resistance in Australian and global cropping systems, and the only way forward is diversity in weed control practices... "There are more than 60 countries where scientists are reporting herbicide resistant weeds and lately we have seen a big problem with weeds resistant to many different types of herbicides," he said... Dr Heap said the problem of multiple herbicide resistance in weeds was compounded by a lack of discovery of new herbicides with alternative modes, or sites of action (MOA) in recent years...

Global research effort takes up resistance challenge.. The evolution of herbicide resistance in weeds in crops poses a real threat to global food production and security, but the battle against it can and must be won... Professor Powles said research was learning how to manage a number of aspects of herbicide resistance, and there had been successes including in the area of harvest weed seed control systems in Australian cropping systems...
