Yellow spot is estimated to cause crop losses of $140 million annually in Western Australia.. A world-first molecular breakthrough by Western Australian researchers is advancing efforts to breed wheat for resistance to yellow spot (also known as tan spot)... In an attempt to cut losses from yellow spot, the GRDC and Curtin University's Centre for Crop and Disease Management (CCDM) started a national 'Stop the Spot' campaign this year calling for growers to send in suspect wheat crop leaves for disease testing...

Join the fight to Stop the Spot.. Yellow spot, known overseas as tan spot, causes national wheat crop losses of $212 million, plus control costs of $463 million per annum... "Collaboration will be crucial to allow researchers to recover current strains of the fungus, monitor the pathogen and stay on top of any changes, so that we are best placed to combat it," she said...

Continued vigilance urged on yellow spot disease.. "Yellow spot was found in varieties such as Mace , Magenta and Wyalkatchem , which indicates that even putatively-resistant varieties can be susceptible to the disease," she said... Dr See said it was still recommended that growers chose varieties 'insensitive' to ToxA such as Mace , Magenta and Wyalkatchem as ToxA was the most potent of the identified effectors...

Department of Agriculture and Food WA (DAFWA) scientists have identified the material in collaboration with researchers from The University of Adelaide and Victoria's Department of Primary Industries under a Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) funded project... "Since starting work on this GRDC funded 'pre-breeding' project in 2010, our research team has found five 'chromosomal regions' - or genes other than tsn1 - which confer resistance to yellow spot," Dr Shankar said... Dr Shankar said the research had also identified novel yellow spot resistant germplasm among lines imported from the International Centre for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA) and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), through the CIMMYT-Australia-ICARDA Germplasm Evaluation (CAIGE) project...
