Research into the health benefits of faba beans has found a powerful combination of properties likely to significantly boost the grain's 'functional foods' status... In GRDC-funded experiments by PhD candidate Siem Siah at Charles Sturt University (CSU) - with researchers from CSU, CSIRO and the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries - phenolic compounds from Rossa and Nura faba beans were applied to five different cancer cell lines in laboratory experiments... In other experiments on the interaction with physiologically important enzymes, the research showed that phenolic extracts from faba beans inhibited angiotensin-converting enzyme, a common target of pharmaceutical medication for hypertension...
