Pioneering Western Australian research into techniques to control weed seeds in grain paddocks at harvest time has received international recognition... Dr Walsh said the research, funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), proved that a high level of weed seeds is retained at wheat crop harvest time, providing further evidence of the effectiveness of harvest weed seed control (HWSC) in preventing weeds from replenishing the seed bank... "The research demonstrated that the four dominant annual weeds of Australian cropping systems - annual ryegrass, wild radish, brome grass and wild oats - retain 77 to 95 per cent of their seeds above a harvest cut height of 15cm at wheat crop maturity," he said...

Diversity the key to protecting critical herbicide.. "We must diversify glyphosate use to preserve this precious herbicide for future harvests and future generations," he said... "An estimated 50 million hectares of the world's best crop land - including 34 million hectares in the US - is infested with glyphosate resistant weeds, and these weeds are often also resistant to other herbicides - posing a threat to global food production," Professor Powles said...

Australian cereal growers adopting harvest weed seed control systems (HWSC) are driving down weed populations to lower levels on their farms, and extending the life of the herbicides they use... Dr Walsh said the problem of herbicide resistant weed populations globally was particularly severe in production systems where herbicide dependence resulted in a lack of weed control diversity... "Although herbicides remain the number one weed control tool in Australian cropping systems, it is now clear that the inclusion of HWSC systems in weed management programs is enabling weed populations to be driven to very low levels, providing some insurance for the sustainability of remaining herbicide resources," he said...

Growers are urged to ensure that grain retained for crop seed this harvest is properly cleaned, with research showing they tend to severely under-estimate weed seed contamination... "The research, supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), confirmed that many farmers unknowingly introduce substantial levels of weed and volunteer crop seeds into their farming systems at seeding time, even when crop seed has been cleaned," AHRI senior researcher Mechelle Owen said... "Furthermore, the 2010 results showed that many of these weed seed populations are resistant to a range of commonly used post-emergent herbicides, indicating that farmers are unknowingly seeding herbicide-resistant weed seeds directly into their paddocks...
