Although we presume there are no insects in grain when being loaded into storage, we generally treat the grain using protectants, or fumigate in gas-tight sealed storage... Fumigating the grain kills any insects present and the aeration maintains grain quality... Always use a mixture of an organophosphate (for example, Fenitrithion , Actellic or Reldan ) with Methoprene (for example, IGR and Diacon ,) either by mixing them together or bought as a 'twin pack' such as Reldan Plus , to protect grain during storage...

Dial the hotline for grain storage advice.. Chris Warrick, who heads up the Grains Research and Development Corporation's Grain Storage Extension Project, says growers choosing to store grain on-farm after this year's harvest are encouraged to phone the hotline if they need assistance. ".. If growers are planning to store grain on their properties it needs to be done correctly...

Peter says there are several advantages to storing your own grain, but quality control becomes your responsibility, so it needs to be taken seriously... As increasing volumes of grain is stored on farm, we need to ensure a high standard of storage practice is carried out so that we build and maintain the reputation of growers off farm deliveries to end users," Mr Botta said... Growers need to keep these areas clean, remove insect protected shelter sites and mow weeds around storages," he said...

The golden rule for storage is to keep checking what is going on... To kill any live insects, fumigating is the only option... When managing your storage system after harvest, it is a good time to critically look at how it is working and how it could be improved, where investment might need to be made and what mix of storage facilities will deliver the desired outcome...

They are involved in a new research partnership supported by the Plant Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre (PBCRC) and the GRDC to assess how grain storage affects the vigour, viability and germination of wheat seed used for subsequent plantings... A GRDC-funded trial at Mingenew is testing the hypothesis (Figure 1) that: stored grain insect pests and storage conditions impact on seed grain viability and vigour; pest populations are driven by grain quality and ambient conditions; and grain quality is affected by moisture content at harvest, temperature, ambient conditions and type of storage system used... "We don't know how grain moisture levels at harvest, types of storage systems and pests are affecting seed viability, germination and vigour," he says...

Yellow spot is caused by a fungus ( Pyrenophora tritici-repentis ), which survives between crops on wheat stubbles... Dr Simpfendorfer is concerned that many growers and advisers believe they can control yellow spot with fungicides, as they do for stripe rust, even though the research clearly shows this is not the case... Once the fungicide wears off in a leaf, after about three weeks, it can get rapidly reinfected off the stubble if there are moist conditions."..
