YELLOW LEAF SPOT RESOURCE: Southern region grain growers are being provided with a useful resource as they endeavour to reduce the incidence of yellow leaf spot... The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has developed a new fact sheet, Management to reduce the risk of yellow leaf spot, to support growers in their efforts to combat the disease... Yellow leaf spot does not affect oats or green barley plants, although barley stubbles can host the pathogen and generate inoculum for the following season...

MITEY USEFUL GUIDE: The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has released a Back Pocket Guide to assist growers in correctly identifying crop mites... Cesar entomologist Dr Paul Umina, who collaborated with GRDC in developing the guide, says mites are small in size and often go unnoticed, but are an important pest group attacking Australian grain crops. ".. The guide is designed to assist growers in identifying the most commonly observed mite species found in the southern and western cropping regions," Dr Umina said...

BROME GRASS CONTROL SUPPORT: Grain growers challenged with the task of controlling the problematic brome grass are being provided with a new resource to support their weed management strategies... GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair David Shannon says brome grass competing early in wheat at a density of 100 plants per square metre can reduce yields by as much as 30 to 50 per cent. ".. The well-adapted weed has proliferated in the past decade, due to the absence of effective herbicides for its control in cereals, intensification of cropping systems, especially wheat on wheat, and the introduction of conservation tillage," Mr Shannon said. "..

GRDC grains forums outline 2013 cropping priorities.. "The focus at the moment is more about making good variety choices, making sure you've got the rotations right, being prepared for a season where we could have minimal stored moisture, getting the seeding right, getting the timing of it right and making sure we've got the rotations right so that weeds don't come up to be a major issue for us," Mr Shannon said... "GRDC is very supportive of only growing those varieties which have some good rust resistance, so (we are) relying on the genetic ability of the plants to deal with rust - rather than using fungicide sprays to always deal with it - and trying to reduce input costs for growers," Mr Shannon said...

Plan ahead to prevent harvest fires.. GRDC Southern Regional Panel Chair, Keith Pengilley, said header and crop damage due to fire is easily prevented if growers take a proactive approach to managing fire risk, particularly when harvesting lentils... "Growers should check the harvester code of practice for each state, to inform them of local conditions and risks to look out for, along with undertaking regular harvester operation checks and maintenance leading up to and throughout harvest to reduce the risk of fire."..

Grain growers in the southern cropping region are being provided with a new resource to help them plan and effectively execute pesticide spray applications to avoid spray drift... The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has just published Weather Essentials for Pesticide Application which aims to help those applying pesticides to understand, observe and interpret local weather elements to ensure the safe and efficient control of pests and diseases in agricultural crops... "It is essential that spray applicators are able to identify and react to weather conditions at a local scale," Mr Tepper says...
