phosphorus level

Through the 2008 trials, which also involved 12 larger, commercial-scale strips, Mr O'Mara found that growers putting extra (above base rates) starter fertiliser incorporating phosphorus on their wheat at the beginning of the season were not getting extra yield benefits - although in long-fallow chickpea, the extra starter fertiliser did increase yield responses... The project is examining whether soil tests, which measure the topsoil, are the right approach for establishing phosphorus levels... Log in or register to leave a comment...

Western Australian growers could save up to $43 million annually by reducing applications of phosphorus by 20-30 per cent, as levels of the nutrient have built up to high levels in many cropping areas... But further research is required to develop 'maintenance' recommendations for phosphorus which will not expose growers to the risk of reduced yields... Dr Wong said the benefits of changing to a maintenance approach for phosphorus included fertiliser savings without loss of yield or phosphorus levels in the soil, and reduced potential environmental risks from leaching and run-off...

Western Australian grain growers can make significant cost savings by reducing phosphorus application to 'maintenance rates', and using soil test results to fine-tune them... "Researchers need to determine the 'maintenance rates' required for different soils and regions of WA so reliable maintenance recommendations can be made for growers," Dr Wong said... "Growers should also be aware that in some soils, severe water repellence, severe acidity and the presence of root diseases may increase the apparent critical soil phosphorus level required by crops," Dr Wong said...
