Storing pulses successfully requires a balance between ideal harvest and storage conditions... Harvesting at 14 per cent moisture content captures grain quality and reduces mechanical damage to the seed but requires careful management to avoid deterioration during storage... eftover bags of grain Chemicals used for structural treatments do not list the specific use before storing pulses on their labels and MrLs in pulses for those products are either extremely low or nil...

Harvest logistics, access to receival sites, increasing on-farm use of grain and marketing opportunities are changing the way grain is handled and stored... The growth of intensive livestock industries offers growers opportunities to store and market their grain directly to end-users... Growers need to understand that the grain they store will eventually end up in some way in the food chain, either for milling purposes, malting or as a feed source for animals...

Fumigation in gas-tight storage is the only option for control of grain pest insects at all stages of their life cycle... But successful fumigation requires knowing how much phosphine gas to apply, when to apply it and the length of time needed for an effective kill... The fact sheet has been developed in consultation with grain storage specialists, including Peter Botta, of PCB Consulting, who says that in order to kill eggs, larva, pupa and adult grain pests, phosphine gas needs to reach, and be maintained at, a concentration possible only in a gas-tight storage...

Peter Botta says on-farm grain storage now places growers directly in the food supply chain... When we do have to use protectants, remember that we are putting chemical on this product, so fumigants must be used correctly," Mr Botta says... About 40 per cent of Australian grain growers now store their product on-farm and need to learn about using protectants and fumigants safely, Mr Botta says...

Use of liquid dichlorvos to control insects in stored cereal grain has been restricted this harvest because of changes to registrations of products containing dichlorvos... Under the new permit, the chemical can only be used for treating grain pests if it is supplied in packaging with a dry break (micromatic) coupler closed delivery system... Grain storage expert Peter Botta says it is illegal for growers to use dichlorvos products supplied without the dry break coupler because it is contrary to the permit conditions in place, which are designed to manage risks of exposure to workers...
