The stay-green phenotype has been successfully used to select for yield and yield stability of sorghum in the Australian northern cereal belt (Borrell et al. 2006) and shows promise for selection in wheat... Deep soil moisture was important for expression of the high-yielding, stay-green phenotype (Christopher et al. 2008)... Small increases in soil moisture extraction post anthesis lead to significant yield gain...

Understanding a weed seed's potential for persistence - the timeframe weed seeds survive within the soil - is crucial to determining whether spraying or burial methods will be the most effective form of control... Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) principal research scientist Dr Michael Widderick says driving down the weed seed bank is growers' best defence against herbicide resistance issues and requires growers to deal with both the weed seeds already existing in the soil and stopping additional weed seeds from entering the soil... It is important to remember that there are many ways in which PA can be adopted and used to make or save money, improve timeliness or environmental management and to carry out onfarm trials... If a grower purchases a GPS unit using one system and then changes to one using the other system, locations will not be translate accurately... Growers are not confident in using the currently available indices in making cropping decisions...

Pre-breeders simply don "t have the resources to evaluate entire germplasm collections... Methods are required to identify trait specific best-bet subsets of germplasm of sizes that economically feasible to evaluate... The project proposed is to further refine the FIGS algorithms so that their predictive power is improved and deploy them to identify relatively small best-bet subsets of germplasm for cereal and pulse crops that will increase the probability of capturing rare alleles for key traits...

In the project, a nursery tunnel was constructed close to the coast and fitted with misting sprays... While the system needs further development to ensure that results have less spatial variability, important progress was made in determining the most appropriate methodology... A misting system is essential, but more work needs to be done into the best system to give less variable results by reducing micro climate effects within the tunnel...

Choosing varieties has become more difficult for growers and advisers in recent years... The passive or gradual approach occurs when growers have seen varieties in trials and gradually gain confidence to manage a new variety over a number of seasons, during which time the area grown on farm gradually increases... If barley trials were not sprayed last year and varieties such as Scope , Buloke and Gairdner yielded significantly lower than Oxford , you would be concerned that leaf rust was present and potentially influenced that trial...
