Clay tests vital in setting up soil productivity this summer.. DAFWA senior research officer at Esperance David Hall says claying increased crop yields in all years of the Dalyup trial, even in those seasons when there were no differences in crop establishment between clay and non-clay treatment... Mr Hall says there was a positive economic response from incorporating clay at all rates used in the long term Dalyup trials, but it took six or seven years to generate a return from the lowest rates of 50t/ha and 100t/ha...

Dr Baldock said practices to increase soil carbon included: enhancing the proportion of perennial vegetation in pastures or conversion of paddocks or portions of paddocks that continually give negative returns to perennial vegetation; increasing the retention of crop residues, reduced stocking rates and increased use of green manure crops to return more plant material and biologically fixed nitrogen to the soil; and optimising farm management inputs and other management practices to maximise water use efficiency and maximise the addition of crop/pasture derived carbon to the soil... "There is no doubt that soils could potentially hold more carbon," he said... "To gain a true appreciation of the potential economic gains associated with a soil carbon increase, the affect on soil productivity and subsequent product yields should be incorporated into the economic analysis," he said...

As an example, where appropriate use of fertilisers can increase productivity beyond that currently being attained, adjusting the amount or timing of fertiliser application would result in greater carbon inputs to the soil... In Figure 4 the estimated changes in soil organic carbon content (%) of the 0-10 cm layer that occur with different levels of wheat production (grain yield) are presented... Results indicate that a sustained productivity of about 4 tonnes/ha/year of wheat grain yield is required to maintain the equilibrium soil carbon content at Roseworthy (Figure 4 a)...

The objective of the paper is to examine the relative contribution of soil biological attributes, including organic carbon to crop production using Western Australian (WA) farming systems as an example... Identifying Soil Constraints to Crop Production Environmental indicators are measures of physical, chemical, biological or socio-economic characteristics which reflect changes in processes, properties or function - with different attributes required for different land uses... In the trial, the microbial biomass (measured to 30 cm depth) contained the equivalent of 192 kg/ha urea (stubble retained) and 146 kg/ha urea (stubble burnt) - a significant source of potentially plant available N. These results illustrate that regular inputs of organic residues promote both a larger but also more active microbial community...
