We focused on the N 2 O emissions associated with the growth of annual legume species, the subsequent breakdown of their residues, and the uptake of their residual nitrogen by a following wheat crop... Results from the project ranged from 0.08% to 0.59% using fluxes calculated by a non-linear interpretation of gas concentration data, and slightly less using a simpler linear regression approach... The losses measured at this time were comparable with those measured under similar conditions in winter, but where there was twice the rate of fertiliser N applied, the potential for N 2 O losses appears to be much higher in the summer period...

According to the most recent coverage of the pasture research being conducted in New Zealand by AgResearch and one of its subsidiaries, Grasslanz Technology Ltd, scientists claim they can produce an improved cultivar of white clover to give cows and sheep extra protein, while at the same time reducing emissions of methane and nitrogen waste and improving animal health... AgResearch scientists have previously shown that condensed tannins found in some pasture species, such as lotus (a legume), can directly reduce methane emissions by as much as 16 per cent and, according to researcher Michael Tavendale, pastures containing condensed tannins are likely to become increasingly important to farmers... Now the scientists are working on a white clover that contains concentrations of the condensed tannins, normally only found as trace amounts in white clover and entirely absent in grasses...
