James Clark, GRDC northern panel chair said the annual spring tour took on special significance this year with inspection of new trial sites and the launch of a new CQ-specific desi chickpea variety, Pistol ... Mr Clark says cropping over the last 30-50 years has also resulted in significant depletion of key soil nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus in many downs soils, whereas the incidence of deficiencies in others such as potassium and sulfur is expected to increase... The panel met with local growers and advisers at sites throughout the tour and visited on-farm with growers including Darren Jensen, Col Dunne, Ken Sullivan, Ivan Gowlett and Dave Daniels...

Grain producers have been urged to give stripe rust a greater priority when selecting triticale varieties following the discovery of a new strain of the airborne fungus... The varieties Jackie, Breakwell, Speedee, Abacus, Prime 322, Kosciuszko, Hillary and Madonna are all vulnerable to the new pathotype," Dr Wellings said. ".. The strain was first found on a sample of Jackie triticale at Bingara, near Moree in northern NSW. "It was the first rust sample I received for the season and it took a while for us to determine it was a new strain," he said...

Stripe rust: the first rust to appear in the cropping cycle.. The approach will also ensure the control of leaf rust and stem rust... As humidity declines, the spores disperse separately and can travel greater distances, resulting in rust infection being more uniform across the crop...

Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC)-supported research has turned its attention to actively managing stripe rust in moderately resistant (MR) wheat varieties including EGA Gregory, Sunvale , Strzelecki and a range of durum varieties... "Despite a season where stripe rust was widespread, this series of trials in 2010 was unable to show any consistent economic return from stripe rust management in MR rated varieties," Mr Daniel said... The research looked at the economic benefits of rust management using fungicide and found that although all single application fungicide treatments on MR rated varieties trended to one to three per cent mean yield benefits, the levels of economic benefit were marginal...

Reports of growers treating stripe rust in moderately resistant wheat varieties have sparked significant concern from leading cereal pathologist, Dr Steven Simpfendorfer... There have been a number of reports of growers being advised to treat stripe rust and apply a fungicide to wheat varieties that are moderately resistant to stripe rust to "preserve green leaf area"... Dr Simpfendorfer says there is no evidence that spraying moderately resistant varieties for stripe rust will result in any return on input cost for growers. "..

Bust the rust in wheat this season.. While stem rust has the potential to inflict large-scale crop losses in the northern region if conditions are favourable, epidemics have largely been kept in check through the selection of varieties with adequate rust resistance... Headed up by Professor Robert Park, the ACRCP program has provided the industry with vision and leadership when it comes to assisting Australian cereal breeders incorporate genetic resistance to rust diseases into varieties to achieve effective long-term disease management...
