New South Wales grain growers can get the jump on spring emergences of the problem weed feathertop Rhodes grass (FTR) with the strategic use of residual herbicides this winter... Speaking to growers and consultants at the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Grains Research Updates earlier this year, Mr Daniel said NGA had undertaken screening of winter crop residual herbicides for activity against spring emergences of FTR (in addition to other summer grass weeds) for the past three seasons... "Growers apply nitrogen at these late timings solely to increase grain-protein levels," says Richard Daniel, chief executive officer of NGA. ".. The project assessed the effect of nitrogen on protein accumulation, the likelihood of economic benefit, and whether there was an optimal method or timing for nitrogen application... The trials suggest that growers: plant more areas of grain legumes to supply nitrogen in a slower release organic form, which is also less prone to denitrification; match nitrogen inputs with water availability and crop-yield potential; avoid applying nitrogen before significant rainfall events that may lead to waterlogging and denitrification; and consider the overall cost of nitrogen application compared to the return on higher grain-protein prices...

Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC)-supported research has turned its attention to actively managing stripe rust in moderately resistant (MR) wheat varieties including EGA Gregory, Sunvale , Strzelecki and a range of durum varieties... "Despite a season where stripe rust was widespread, this series of trials in 2010 was unable to show any consistent economic return from stripe rust management in MR rated varieties," Mr Daniel said... The research looked at the economic benefits of rust management using fungicide and found that although all single application fungicide treatments on MR rated varieties trended to one to three per cent mean yield benefits, the levels of economic benefit were marginal...
