To help address the knowledge gap Grain Orana Alliance (GOA) chief executive officer Maurie Street recently conducted a trial on his property in Central West New South Wales to examine the effects of windrow burning... Mr Street says growers need to look further than chemical solutions to manage herbicide-resistant weeds in no-till systems... "I have concerns about herbicide resistance and felt that we needed to try something different that wasn't just another herbicide," Mr Street says...

Factors for making the switch to direct heading canola.. Grain Orana Alliance chief executive officer Maurie Street says growers may be able to improve canola yields through direct heading... "Growers can windrow most of their crop as normal, but then try direct-heading in a paddock or two and assess for themselves how well it works," Mr Street says...

The high incidence of stripe rust in dual purpose cereal crops has prompted calls for growers to consider varieties with higher rust resistance ratings... "Rust resistance is particularly important when growing long season cereals as they enter the "green bridge" danger period when rust spores can be over-summering on weeds and volunteer cereal plants," Dr Rainbow said... Mr Street said while the results were based on limited trials and seasons and in these two trials where Jockey seed treatment was used on Wedgetail dual purpose wheat it did not delay stripe rust onset or offer any yield or quality advantages over standard seed treatments in two trials over two seasons...

Mr Street runs the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC)- funded GOA and is well aware of the difficult issue of herbicide resistance... "I'm a zero-till cropper; I've got no livestock in the system and it's all winter crop at the moment," Mr Street said... "I took the straw spreaders and the spinners off and made up a cheap chute for the back, which probably cost me $100 in steel and a couple of hours in the workshop and it worked fine," Mr Street said...

Canola N strategies may need rethink.. Grain Orana Alliance chief executive officer Maurie Street is encouraging canola growers to reassess their approach to N management and investment to avoid leaving valuable yield "in the paddock"... "After running these trials and seeing the response to what would traditionally be considered very high rates of N, it's now my belief that many growers could be leaving a significant amount of yield in the paddock due to lack of N...

The Grain Orana Alliance (GOA) has shortlisted windmill grass in the five main problem weeds facing growers in the northern grains region... Windmill grass has been confirmed as glyphosate-resistant and it is quickly becoming one of the most problematic weeds in zero-till summer fallows across the northern grains region," Mr Street says... Mr Street says GOA surveys highlight the link between farming systems that use single-mode control techniques and herbicide resistance in windmill grass...
