Barry Gray, from South Kukerin, has significantly minimised weed seed-set at harvest time with narrow windrow burning... Barry says destroying weed seeds at harvest using narrow windrows that are burned the next autumn is a logical and necessary step to reducing long-term weed burdens... Barry says as a result of using HWSC, about one-third of the family's cereal crops were sown this year with no pre-emergent herbicides for annual ryegrass and half of the farm was not sprayed with any herbicides for wild radish control...

Growers are urged to ensure that grain retained for crop seed this harvest is properly cleaned, with research showing they tend to severely under-estimate weed seed contamination... "The research, supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), confirmed that many farmers unknowingly introduce substantial levels of weed and volunteer crop seeds into their farming systems at seeding time, even when crop seed has been cleaned," AHRI senior researcher Mechelle Owen said... "Furthermore, the 2010 results showed that many of these weed seed populations are resistant to a range of commonly used post-emergent herbicides, indicating that farmers are unknowingly seeding herbicide-resistant weed seeds directly into their paddocks...

The Weed Seed Wizard was developed in WA and is being brought to Queensland and NSW with support from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC)... Mr Congreve says Weed Seed Wizard can be fine-tuned to individual farms using local weather data, soil type and management options... "The Weed Seed Wizard can help advisers understand and predict the impact of weed management decisions on crop yield and weed seedbanks."..

Offensive arms growers with tools to fight resistance.. WeedSmart provides a practical and innovative tool kit of resources for advisers and growers to keep weeds - and herbicide resistance - at bay... WeedSmart encourages growers to knock out 100 per cent of weeds at every opportunity, implementing chemical and non-chemical weed control measures throughout a season, reducing weed seed banks and preventing weeds from setting seed and spreading resistance...

The Weed Seed Wizard is helping farm advisors and their grain grower clients make more informed weed management decisions that will reduce weed seed banks and the cost of controlling those weeds... Then further developed into a 56.489: more user friendly decision support tool by these R&D partners in a GRDC supported project, 63.29: nationally coordinated by Sally Peltzer of WA 69.27: What the Wizard can do is take real farm data such as what weed species are present; herbicides 74.96: used; when they were applied; rainfall records; what crops where sown and when, and their 79.969: harvest dates; and use that data to calculate the rise and fall of the weed population throughout 85.329: the year and over a number of years... 187.099: Cameron Weeks: Say a chaff cart is going to cost you 60 thousand 190.459: dollars, we can easily calculate what that 196.609: amortize over time etc...

Harvest weed seed control plays an important role in stopping weed seeds from entering the soil... Addressing growers and advisers at the GRDC Updates earlier this year, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) principal research scientist Dr Michael Widderick said while resistance to one mode of action herbicide was extremely common in the north, many cases of multiple or cross resistance was also now occurring particularly in problem weeds like wild oats... Caption: Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) principal research scientist Dr Michael Widderick emphasised the importance of driving down the weed seed bank for effective herbicide resistance management during a presentation to the GRDC Northern Grains Research Update at Goondwindi earlier this year...

" the problem may just provide a real boon for growers if it is used as an opportunity to test the weed seeds for herbicide susceptibility before the 2015 growing season.".. Mr Storrie said currently only a small percentage of grain growers tested weed seeds for herbicide susceptibility, but the gradings from annual ryegrass ergot in 2014 provided a readily available source of seeds to see which herbicides would be effective this year... Caption : Many southern WA grainbelt growers were grading harvested grain before delivery this year, creating an opportunity to now test weed seeds in the residue for herbicide resistance/susceptibility...

Peter Newman from AHRI says that very high weed seed banks can be eroded to low, near-zero levels by committing to a five-component stacked approach... By combining five essential measures and repeating the exercise year after year, growers can run down seed banks even when experiencing high levels of herbicide resistance on their farms... "The five components of a successful strategy are a double knock of herbicides; mixing and rotating chemicals; competitive crops; stopping seed set; and harvest weed seed control," Mr Newman said...
