Barley Variety and Research Update 2008 Jason Eglinton Barley Program Leader, School of Agriculture, Food & Wine, University of Adelaide, SA The 2007 Season Like many other parts of Australia, Victoria experienced a wide range of production conditions during 2007, largely following a north-south gradient... The rankings of varieties were consistent with previous observations despite the small range in screenings values, with the feed varieties returning the best results including 1.9% for Fleet, 2.9% for Hindmarsh and 3.7% for Keel... The other major difference in disease resistance is the susceptibility of Hindmarsh to spot form of net blotch compared to Keel and Fleet which are rated MR-MS. Keel also has a reputation as being very itchy largely due to its long rachilla hairs (other varieties with long rachilla hair include Clipper, Baudin and Buloke)...
