Many decisions to manage crop establishment pests should be made well before sowing when there are far more control options available... Extremely high levels of resistance to several synthetic pyrethroids (> 200,000 fold in the case of bifenthrin) were detected using laboratory bioassays, and this has translated to significant yield losses in the field... Further properties with insecticide resistance have been detected since 2010, although at this stage, resistance has not been detected outside of WA. Experts predict resistance in RLEM will spread to other states, including to Victoria...

The majority of insect species present in these landscapes, especially pests, are good at moving between these habitats and seeking out the resources they need, such as food and shelter for all or part of the year... There is a strong interest in developing integrated pest management (iPm) on a large scale because pests are mobile... Pest suppressive landscapes will have the right mix of habitats that support beneficial insects and allow them to move into crop fields, but discourage the build-up of pests...

We found that crops planted post pasture had in general higher numbers of pests eg earth mites whereas cereals had the lowest number of earth mites present unless weeds were present within the crop... We found that the use of prophylactic sprays does not affect all pests...
