In Figure 5, we show soil water measured at various depths using gravimetric methods and EnviroSCAN@" probes at Norwin in Queensland during 2010 - 2012 (Dalgliesh 2013)... The techniques also arise out of the aerospace industries, where the earliest approaches were developed for reducing errors in predictions of missile or spacecraft positions estimated from measurements of speed and direction... The really good news is that methods used in assimilating models and soil moisture probes could be used to improve the quality of the information from the model, and also the quality of information from the probes...

To give us a better understanding of how much water was remaining in the soil if we wanted to undertake forward marketing decisions for our crops... We wanted a tool to give us a better understanding of how much moisture we had remaining in the soil profile (and where it was located) before making a decision to spread N. The soil moisture probes give us this ability... Following our experience with forward marketing we wanted a better decision tool to help us decide if we had enough moisture to grow a crop and make forward sales and probably more importantly following 2007, know when the crop is about to run out of moisture and if options such as purchasing grain contracts back needs to be carried out...

Mr Wilksch, who specialises in the installation and management of soil moisture probes, says the probes have extremely accurate sensors every 10 centimetres, which tell the grower where the moisture is in the soil profile and from where the plant roots are actively drawing moisture... Data from soil moisture probes is being used with Yield Prophet modelling to improve soil-type characterisations.. Mr D'Emden says initial results from the 2014 probes showed that half of the GS30 (June/July) Yield Prophet estimates were within 300 kilograms per hectare of the final crop yield, increasing to 70 per cent within 300kg at GS90, with a median difference between the Yield Prophet GS90 estimates and final yield of 0.35t/ha... The total PAW estimates require further calibration to account for the influence of subsoil constraints such as salinity, sodicity or acidity...
