" Using soil moisture probes to make better farming decisions 20 November 2014 South Australian grain grower Tom Robinson, Halbury, talks about his experiences using soil moisture probes on the family farm... The way 139.189: I'm looking at it now is that possibly we might be able to grow a winter cover crop 143.049: to make more ground cover and also have a diverse mix of a cover crop in there, and 148.4: then we'll kill that crop and then sow sunflowers into it... We're drying out 166.43: our profile; by having a winter cover crop we're growing more cover, more ground cover; 171.769: we're creating more diversity; we're getting a legume back into our system; and then we're 176.209: also able, by doing that, to grow a different crop, a summer crop, which is hopefully better 183.7: for our end goal which is soil health...

Farming 260 hectares at Yalca in northern Victoria, the Thorntons grow maize over summer, as well as wheat, barley, canola and faba beans over winter, all under surface irrigation... Ray works on average yields of 12 tonnes/ha for maize and says plant population is "king" in achieving yield targets... In August, Ray will spray weeds and in September will use the strip tiller to band phosphorus at 7 to 8cm and nitrogen at nearly 30cm below the soil surface, then sow maize later with a 'pop-up' or starter fertiliser...

CliMate estimates stored soil moisture based on individual paddock data, such as the length of the fallow period, the amount of soil organic matter, stubble load, soil type and rainfall received during the fallow period... Research undertaken over several years by NSW DPI staff such as Col McMaster and Barry Haskins (now a private researcher/consultant) noted that delayed or missed fallow weed control opportunities quickly led to loss of stored soil moisture, as well as loss of more than 40kg/ha of available soil nitrogen...

Research quantifies benefits of summer rainfall.. While crop residue on the surface of paddocks plays an important role in preventing wind and water erosion, it has little impact on the amount of water stored in the soil from summer rain... "Even if a grower received 25mm of rain on April 15, there would only be 7 or 8mm of moisture left in the soil by the start of May, which is obviously beneficial and provides an opportunity for seeding, but is less than growers might have thought," he said...

Capacitance soil water probes can provide useful information about soil water data when used with adequate professional support... Computer simulation models predict soil water information based on soil tests, soil characterisations and climate/rainfall data... Soil characterisation is about measuring the ability of the soil to hold water for use by a particular crop - or the size of the soil water 'bucket' - and takes into account potential constraints that affect the soil's ability to store water and plant's ability to extract it...
