Catalogue: GRDC Research Summaries
The Central Queensland (CQ) region, including the Central Highlands and Dawson/Callide subregions, is home to some 400 grain growers... The CQ production environment is characterised by a summer dominant extremely variable and often marginal rainfall... In response to the complex, flexible and risky CQ production environment, grain growers have developed a highly opportunistic production system that is based on maximizing the use of rainfall...

Chances of optimal yields are improved by establishing at least 700,000 plants/ ha (70 plants/m2) even in seasons of low rainfall... Plant populations below 600,000 plants/ha may result in a reduction in yield and increased weed competition... Common features of deep furrow techniques include narrow tines with high breakout pressures, narrow points to minimise soil disturbance and moisture loss and high pressure narrow press wheels (slot into the seed trench and help stabilise it) which reduce the seed-surface distance and help seed/soil contact...

Yellow spot is prevalent in northern region wheat crops it remains one of the most misdiagnosed wheat diseases... "Fungicides only treat the part of the plant that they come into contact with," Dr Simpfendorfer said... Dr Simpfendorfer said a lot more inoculum was generated on stubbles of more susceptible wheat varieties, such as EGA Gregory and LongReach Spitfire , so the risk of the disease developing was much greater where a susceptible wheat variety was sown on the stubble of a previously infected susceptible variety, such as EGA Gregory on EGA Gregory ...
