" Agribusiness Trial Extension Network.. The aim of the project is to extend an existing program designed to test if low initial inputs will minimise the financial risk of growing crops in dry seasons but still allow for incrop inputs to be applied to achieve optimal yields... As many of the current rules of input use, such as when to apply P and how much seed to use, have developed in the last 50 years there is a need to reassess their appropriateness in today's.....

Finally to the numerous farmers, business people and researchers I met around the world that were also very generous with their time and knowledge, thank you... It is widely regarded that cactus is high yielding, highly palatable and a readily available source of carbohydrates but lacks crude protein and crude fibre to get the best performance out of cactus it needs to be supplemented with a cheap source of fibre and protein (Nefzaoui, Salem, Salem, 2000, p512 - 516)... Develop a farming operation where a normal budget would rely on less than 50% of traditional farming system to generate the income reducing exposure to financial risk in droughts...

Recent collaborative research work investigating the decision-making tool Yield Prophet , supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), aimed to help Western Australian growers answer this question... Growers accessing information from the sites could easily identify crop progress during the season and adapt their logistics and applications ... According to a report compiled by DAFWA about the work in the Albany port zone, Yield Prophet is a moderately complex program for which new users require assistance, and growers probably need consultant support to get best value from it...

Pre-sowing assessment of crown rot inoculum levels in paddocks is critical if growers and consultants are to avoid "flying blind" on agronomic management and maximise winter crop production potential... "Following below average summer rainfall for 2013-14 we undertook a Crown Analytical Stubble test for one of our clients near Edgeroi leading into the dry 2014 winter crop season as well as a PreDicta B test to assess Crown rot and nematode levels," Mr Miller said... "Following the results some necessary rotational adjustments to the farm program were made including selecting canola to assist in stubble degradation and the selection of a more crown rot tolerant wheat cultivar, Impala...

SARDI's Dr Margaret Evans says yield loss from eyespot comes as a result of the lesions forming on the base of the stem and lodging... Growers in high and medium rainfall zones across the Southern Region are being asked to keep a look out for eyespot in cereal crops this season after the disease made a surprise appearance in a number of wheat crops in 2015... Yield losses from eyespot are most obvious when caused by lodging, which is when plants infected by the fungus fall over in different directions and form a tangled mess on the ground, making harvesting difficult...

Ian Carter places a strong emphasis on late-season nitrogen application at Pine Ridge, NSW... The Harringtons previously waited for rain before seeding, but now embrace dryland farming techniques and start dry-seeding from 1 May. "Poor seasons educated us to put the crop in early, to insulate it against the dry spring," Tim says... Rowan and Graeme have worked with James Stewart of Vickery Bros., Coleraine, for 10 years to conduct deep nitrogen soil tests to assess what each crop removes from the soil and calculate yield potential and fertiliser requirements for the next season...
