Research is helping growers make more informed decisions about including lucerne in crop rotations, reports Chris Greenwood.. While some cereal growers have started to question the economics of lucerne in crop rotations, it is still regarded by agronomists as a valuable contributor to lifting soil nitrogen levels... "Some farmers will see their pastures as a source of nitrogen for the following crop, whereas for others it is more important as a grazing source...

KEYMESSAGES Inoculating pasture legumes must be an ongoing process... The efficiencies of the products were continually evaluated for use in Western Australian agriculture by research at the Centre for Rhizobium Studies... Measurements included the percentage of plants nodulated, the amount of nodules on each plant and the strain of bacteria in each nodule, which was identified by fingerprint profiling using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as described in Yates (2005)...

The Southern Queensland Farming Systems (SQFS) project has demonstrated that growers and advisers had a) at least three distinct planting strategies when planting on marginal moisture and b) a low level of understanding of the potential economic and agronomic implications of these three strategies... Future projects should attempt to actively incorporate a range of private and public sector segments of the farming RD&E supply chains on their management committees and consequent portfolio of projects... Starter P rates are being reduced to optimise P use efficiency (PUE), and fluids are being evaluated as a way of further improving starter PUE...

SU herbicides are widely used in Australian cereal-livestock zones but their soil residues can persist into the following years... Field experiments confirm Angel's ability to tolerate a wide range of SU residues, in many cases outyielding its susceptible parent, Herald , by over 100% for dry matter production, seed yield and regeneration... Notwithstanding its good tolerance to SU soil residues, trial results have also shown that Angel can still be effectively controlled to an acceptable level in-crop by a range of commonly used chemicals...
