Scientists share keys to drought tolerance Some of the world's leading crop researchers met in Adelaide recently to discuss breeding strategies for increasing plants' water-use efficiency By Gio Braidotti With global grain stocks at their lowest levels in decades and water stress accounting for a glaring proportion of global shortfalls, the 2007 Genomics Symposium in Adelaide allowed some of the world's best drought-tolerance pre-breeders to put their heads together on new ways to test, select and dissect traits that can maintain yields under drought... Overall, genomics is currently playing a more peripheral role in the work of conventional pre-breeders, with scientists attempting to dissect the genetic basis of drought tolerance and map traits to discrete chromosomal subregions (called QTLs or quantitative trait loci)... The aim of the collaborative NSW DPI and Vic DPI project is to 'equally and fairly' provide advanced germplasm containing important new or improved traits to all Australian private canola breeding companies, to ensure that Australian growers have cultivars that allow them to compete effectively on world markets... The pre-breeding outputs from this project are: improved screening methodologies that breeders can incorporate into their programs; new germplasm with identified improved key traits that have a genetic basis; information on the genetic control of those traits; and molecular markers on the DNA of the new germplasm to allow breeders to manipulate the new traits speedily and efficiently in their breeding programs... Populations and Germplasm: The project is working closely with the Canola Molecular Marker Program which is identifying the molecular markers to assist breeders with the selection of the new, key traits...

Unpredictable weather conditions at the time of flowering cause large yield fluctuations on a regular basis... Stabilising productivity of wheat crops in an unpredictable and changing environment requires wheat varieties that are more tolerant to abiotic stress conditions (terminal drought, heat, chilling and frost)... We have identified the genetic loci responsible for maintaining grain number in two wheat doubled haploid populations (Cranbrook x Halberd, Sundor x AUS30604) using hydroponics and osmotic stress as an alternative screening method and are currently evaluating drought tolerance of selected lines of these populations under field conditions...
