The pre-breeding component will involve physiological characterization of elite germplasm from Australia and CIMMYT as well as genetic resources (synthetic & landraces) to design better targeted crosses... In accordance with recent recommendations (Australian Winter Cereals Workshop- Breeding for Better Performance Under Drought, ANU, 5-6 Sept 2007) work will focus on (i) traits that are unconstrained by yield penalties in wetter years; (ii) drought response under a range of 'water balances'; (iii) identifying germplasm with the ability to extract subsoil water; and, (iv) phenotyping in realistic environments... The first wave of physiological crosses (crosses based on physiological parameters) made at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and targeted to drought gave twice as many superior yielding lines under drought than the crosses based solely on yield information...

Salinity affects plant growth through impacts on plant water relations... We expect that the yields of cultivars in the water-limited environment will be highly correlated with the yields on the saltland site at Ballidu, but the yields in the non water-limited environment will not be correlated with the yields in either the water-limited or the saltland environment... Drought is impacting on the productivity of cereals in the drier parts of the wheatbelt and farmers need access to the best cereal cultivars for particular soils, timely "soil type specific" advice on how to respond to dry seasons, and advice about whether certain kinds of soils of low productivity should be withdrawn altogether from cereal production...

Natural selection has played a significant role in the selection of drought tolerance in chickpeas since their cultivation... Chickpeas play an important role in the sustainability of cereal-based farming systems by improving soil health by fixing atmospheric nitrogen reducing the use of nitrogenous fertilisers produced using fossil fuels... The main goal of the project was to enhance production and productivity of chickpeas under Mediterranean type environments through genetic and agronomic manipulation...

But I don't think it is that clear cut - most farmers in Australia would be pretty happy if they could achieve a 5t wheat crop, but if you belonged to the 10t club in Europe, and you only got enough rain for a 5t crop, you would claim you had suffered a pretty bad drought... The definition of drought is going to change dependent on your specific environment... By combining different parents of known good performance under drought, and then yield testing in the target environment we have been able to select varieties such as Gladius that perform exceptionally well under most drought conditions encountered by growers...

" Screening for drought tolerance under well-watered conditions: A rapid method to predict wilting point of grain crops.. Permanent wilting point is strongly correlated with adaptation to low water availability in a meta-analysis of more than 300 species, but a correlation between wilting point and drought tolerance in crop cultivars, though expected in principle, has not been tested, due to the difficulty and long time required to assess this trait using previous methods... The outputs of the project will be:(1) demonstration that the wilting point is a reliable indicator of drought tolerance in wheat(2) a rapid method of selecting drought tolerant germplasm under well-watered conditions based on the wilting point(3) a new method that can be potentially used for screening germplasm of other crop speciesThe overall outcome of the project will be proof that our method is able to predict relative differences in drought tolerance of wheat under controlled conditions...

The collaboration has overcome previously restricted access to genetic resources in India and China, allowing Australian breeders to now access germplasm with the potential to deliver traits such as increased tolerance to drought and to major diseases...
