The project has provided technological support to improve sprouting resistance in wheat by Australian wheat breeders by annual phenotyping of advanced breeding lines, development of improved screening technologies including molecular markers, and germplasm with improved sprouting resistance based on grain dormancy... Given that grain dormancy is a difficult trait to manipulate due to interactions with both maturity and the environment, molecular markers tightly linked to the major QTLs are a high priority... Results from dormant x non-dormant crosses and reciprocal crosses indicate that 2-3 QTLs or genes are involved in dormancy in white-grained as well as red-grained wheat genotypes whilst the patterns of phenotype expression are consistent with a model involving an interaction between an embryo factor (sensitivity to abscisic acid (ABA) that declines during after-ripening, most probably the 4A QTL) and at least one other factor that is expressed in the seed coat...

Two genes related to dormancy (which prevents untimely germination leading to pre-harvest sprouting) have been discovered.. New gene-discovery techniques also mean an accelerated process for isolating potentially important wheat genes for other traits.. In terms of knowing which grain-growing regions these genes will work in, given that not all varieties are suited across the country, Dr Gubler says it is not known how these genes actually confer dormancy, although the researchers do know the expression of the genes is suppressed by high temperatures during grain development - and this then elevates the risk of PHS...

The results suggest that breeding programs could use CEC to characterise fixed lines for grain dormancy, perhaps during the off-season to complement field evaluation in the main growing season... AHRI researcher Mechelle Owen said that although other studies had already found evidence of a correlation between dormancy and resistance in annual ryegrass, the AHRI research was the first large scale study to demonstrate the link... "For each population, initial dormancy and change in dormancy over a six-month period were measured, and the resistance status of seedlings to four herbicides was assessed," Ms Owen said... "Intensive cropping programs are likely to select for increased dormancy when knockdown herbicides kill off the proportion of seed which is able to germinate with the opening rains, leaving the more dormant proportion of the population to germinate later in the season, usually in the crop," she said...
