New fungicides to tackle Rhizoctonia.. Paul Bogacki (left) from SARDI and Jack Desbiolles from the University of South Australia, discuss the plot layout for the Rhizoctonia fungicide trial, which has included surface, seed and deep placement of the fungicide... Research results indicate the risk of Rhizoctonia damage will be reduced for: cereals following grass-free canola, pulses and pastures; crops with rapid early root growth down the soil profile - consider sowing early with soil disturbance below the seed, deep band nitrogen and new fungicide seed dressings; and registered fungicide seed dressings used in paddocks with low to moderate levels of Rhizoctonia..

New wheat changes weed management options.. James Clark, Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) northern panel chair said Elmore CL Plus , a new Clearfield wheat released by Australian Grain Technologies (AGT) gives growers another tool to combat problem weeds... "There is a discount in moving from a prime hard to hard variety but it may be worth it for the opportunity to reset the system, control weeds and use residual chemicals in the fallow, a practice that would normally lock growers out of wheat that year," he said...

Growers urged to act now on frost damage.. "Growers should check crops for damage immediately, as delay will limit their options to reduce financial losses from frost damage," he said... "Frost has caused direct yield losses of up to 80 per cent in individual canola crops in localised areas of central and southern parts of the state, although the results of frost damage are not quick to show in cereal crops," he said...

A plant-derived molecule with the ability to protect grain crops from a broad range of fungal diseases has been found to also kill human cancer cells... "We found that the defensin works against a pathogen, such as a cancer cell, by binding to its outer membrane [via molecules called phosphoinositides] and in doing so disrupts the membrane's connection to the cell's internal skeleton... The primary strategy involves using the gene that encodes the defensin within a DNA construct that allows commercially grown crops to express the defensin molecule throughout the plant using GM technology...
