There has been a considerable increase in the incidence of crops affected by root lesion nematode (RLN) throughout the Western Australian (WA) cropping region... The recent root disease survey showed that the highest levels of all root diseases in WA are in the southern high rainfall zone... The objectives of the project are to:1) Identify sites in WA that are suppressive to one or more root diseases of wheat including take-all, rhizoctonia root rot, crown rot and RLN. Sites will be selected from three past and current projects including the DAFWA "Profitable crop sequencing in WA" [P. WHITE, M. HARRIES] project (which will establish 150 focus sites at which inoculum level and disease incidence will be measured), the "Soil Quality" [D. MURPHY] project (which has previously established a large number of geo-referenced monitoring sites around the WA agricultural region and the inoculum level was measured), and the DAFWA 2006-2008 cereal root disease survey sites [DAW00159]...

Western Australian researchers are a step closer to answering this question, having identified several paddocks which potentially suppress diseases including take-all, crown rot and rhizoctonia barepatch, and pests like root lesion nematode (RLN)... New Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) research questions the value of fungicidal treatment of yellow spot in susceptible wheat, showing a maximum of just $1.50 profit gained for every one dollar spent... Richard Daniel, chief executive officer of the GRDC-funded Northern Grower Alliance (NGA) says results from 2011 research on EGA Gregory shows single applications of full registered rates of all fungicides evaluated reduced yellow spot severity by up to 50 per cent on the top three leaves... "Multiple fungicide applications did improve disease suppression to the tune of about 70pc reduction on the top three leaves but at the rates tested, there were no clear or consistent differences in disease suppression between the fungicides evaluated."..

We propose to use a polyphasic approach involving (i) comparative analysis of high- and low-suppressive soils, (ii) pre-treatment or prior exposure of soils to factors that have been attributed to the development of disease suppression and (iii) amplification of target regions prior to high-throughput sequencing... The use of direct soil DNA/RNA extraction technologies will help overcome the bottlenecks associated with the culture based methods... We propose to establish close working links with other projects in SBI-Theme 3 for field sites used, consistency in methodologies and complementary research approaches...
