In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

DAFWA researcher Ravjit Khangura standing in a field of canola... Dr Khangura said the main control tactic was to reduce the frequency of host species, such as canola and lupins, and it was recommended growers avoid planting canola on paddocks with high sclerotinia levels during the past three years... "Previous research in WA's northern cropping region has shown that applying a single fungicide spray is often effective in reducing canola yield losses from sclerotinia when the crop is at the 15 to 30 per cent flowering stage (coinciding with the onset of spore release) and conditions are conducive to disease," she said...

2010 provided the most favourable conditions for the development of foliar diseases for 12 years which generated epidemics of yellow spot in wheat and spot form net blotch and leaf rust in barley... It is essential that an integrated approach of cultural, genetic and chemical methods is implemented to maximize control and minimize losses... To minimize inoculum, there should be no green barley plants growing in the region for 4 to 6 weeks before sowing - the longer, the better...

Our aim was to investigate the interaction of nitrogen and fungicide in the control of yellow spot in wheat varieties of varying yellow spot resistance... The results of the trial suggest that nitrogen and fungicide are each effective on their own, and also in combination, for managing leaf spot diseases on susceptible wheat varieties... Nitrogen application increases the vigour of wheat plants and number of tillers and can increase yield and may allow for fungicide application to be more effective, particularly on susceptible wheat varieties...

Evidence of sclerotinia in canola is starting to emerge in the northern wheatbelt on the back of recent cooler moist conditions and the closing over of crop canopies... The window for effective preventative fungicide control of this disease in the region has closed for the bulk of crops - or is rapidly closing - and it is advisable to monitor canola closely for signs of infection... Currently registered fungicides for management of sclerotinia in canola include Prosaro , Iprodione (eg. Rovral Liquid) and Procymidone (eg. Sumisclex , Fortress )...

Sclerotinia stem rot has taken a heavy toll on canola crops in parts of the southern cropping region; the disease has infected some crops by up to 60 per cent... Plant pathologist Kurt Lindbeck, of the NSW Department of Primary Industries, says a combination of factors led to widespread and damaging occurrences of sclerotinia stem rot in 2013... , crops flowered early due to the mild winter temperatures," says Mr Lindbeck, who is based at the Wagga Wagga Agricultural Institute where he leads GRDC-funded research on the management of pulse and oilseed diseases...

Disease data was assessed at each application timing and finally ~3-4 weeks after the T3 application... Figure 2 shows the performance of the range of fungicide treatments when applied at T2 (GS32-33) on disease levels assessed at GS75-83 (milk to soft dough)... The very early T1 application (~GS15) provided useful initial disease suppression but had negligible impact on the final disease levels assessed at the late milk to early dough stages...
