A research project in the Great Southern region has demonstrated that the decision tool Yield Prophet could help local growers maximise crop yields and minimise risks associated with management decisions... "Following a number of extremely variable seasons, many growers in the region have lacked the confidence to implement management practices to maximise yields, and have been taking an approach of 'less risk' for their in-season decision making," Mr Whisson said... Mr Whisson said the benefit of Yield Prophet to local growers over the course of the season was obvious, especially when it came to making nitrogen and fungicide decisions based on forecast yield, as well as providing side benefits such as yield estimates for insurance purposes...

The new age of soil phosphorus testing is.. Extensive testing over recent years and trial analysis this year have demonstrated that the DGT test offers considerable improvement in predicting soil available P levels on many cropping soils in south-eastern Australia... Dr Mason says the DGT test is a plastic device that uses an iron oxide gel as a P sink, which attracts available P through a membrane...

Soil testing the key to fertiliser strategy.. Subsoil reserves of mineral nutrients such as P have been run down over recent decades, with practices such as direct drill cropping accelerating the loss... Soil testing provides an understanding of your fertility profile and is a vital step in making informed fertiliser decisions...

Merredin grain grower Mick Caughey has fine-tuned his summer weed management to conserve soil moisture... This includes retaining stubble and spraying summer weeds (to conserve stored soil moisture) and using precision-farming principles to better care for the soil... Other on-farm changes to deal with a changing climate include a timely approach to spraying summer weeds using a contract sprayer...

Grazing stubble benefits sheep and next season crops.. Stubble has always played a part in the Sinclairs' livestock enterprise, but the family began to have concerns about the impact sheep were having on soil structure during the Millennium Drought... During the past six years their country in southern NSW has experienced productive seasons creating a greater stubble biomass...

Victorian grower Leigh Bryan says VRA has resulted in "massive" savings on his farm at Swan Hill, Victoria, and enabled him to treat soils how they need to be treated... Leigh, who farms 2400ha comprising wheat, barley, canola, lentils and field peas, is entering his tenth season using VRA after converting his spur gear drive seeder to an electric drive in 2005... Leigh also has his boomspray set up for VRA, but he says using the technology with liquids is more difficult than using it with granules because of the pressure ranges...
