Microplitis is the main vector of ascovirus and so plays a key role in increasing the percentage of caterpillars affected by this disease... High levels of ascovirus may lead to a decline in Microplitis wasp populations... small pale caterpillars in unusually exposed situations (e.g. on a leaf) that look as though they have been feeding in the same place for some time, making a window in the leaf, are probably infected with ascovirus because infected caterpillars can take a long time to die, ascovirus infection in the population can show up in crop scouting data over a series of checks as a number of small caterpillars (shorter than 8 mm) in the crop, with very few medium-large caterpillars coming through...

Risk factors: Coastal crops planted into cane trash blankets are at potential risk from the sugar cane armyworm... Occasional (rare) plague outbreaks of common and northern armyworms may occasionally spill over into peanuts from more favoured hosts... In-furrow sprays are registered for control at planting but trying to control cutworms in pegging crops with dense canopies is problematic due to poor coverage...

Winter cereals include wheat, barley, oats, canary and triticale... Insects are not normally a major problem in winter cereals but there will be times when they build up to an extent that control may be warranted... Small larvae take 8-10 days to reach a size capable of head lopping, so if small larvae are found in crops nearing full maturity/harvest no spray may be needed, whereas small larvae in late crops which are still green and at early seed fill may reach a damaging size in time to significantly reduce crop yield...

Darling Downs grain growers have been placed on alert for bands of dayfeeding armyworms that are on the march, defoliating sorghum, corn and millet crops and threatening yield potential... While reports suggest that the damage has been patchy so far, the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) warns that any outbreaks have the potential to cause significant yield loss if crops are defoliated before reaching physiological maturity... "The threat to win-ter crops is expected to be low, but mon-i-tor-ing as the crops emerge, par-tic-u-larly in prox-im-ity to army-worm out-breaks now, is recommended...
