Ripper trials to overturn compaction constraints.. The brothers say soil constraints associated with compaction, including acidity, sodicity and aluminium toxicity, affect part of every paddock on their 23,000-hectare property, with yield losses of up to 0.5 tonnes/ha in some areas... "We hope the deep-ripping coupled with applying organic matter in the root zone will help crop roots to proliferate, the soil to open up and maybe also overcome some soil chemical problems," Dr Blackwell says...

Potential yield was estimated by a modified French and Schultz approach using monthly rainfall for each site and season... Exchangeable cations were measured on prewashed samples because many subsoils were saline (EC 1:5 higher than 0.5 dS/m)... Most sites showed no yield increase in the season of application...

Jason puts the boot into difficult soils.. Case in point: last year, in just four weeks, Jason, his father and uncle churned out 1000 seeding boots for growers in SA and Western Australia... Jason describes his early designs as "quite agricultural", but after on-farm testing he has refined the RootBoot, adding features from his own seeding wish list: extra tungsten for longer wear, drop-forged bolt-on knifepoint for extra strength, extra tile inserts on the point to eliminate side wear and three quick-change designs...

Rather than buying a spader immediately, Damian set up a water repellence amelioration trial in collaboration with Dr Stephen Davies from the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia... It was enough to give Damian the confidence to expand his spading program and buy his own machine - a four-metre Farmax , capable of mixing the soil to a depth of 300 to 400mm... When Ground Cover caught up with Damian in July, he was hoping for a wet August after recording just 100mm of rain at that point: "We've grown accustomed to having a good season and then a poor one," he says.
