A new report outlines actions taken by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) in response to local priority issues identified by Western Australian grain growers... The GRDC's 2014-15 Regional Cropping Solutions Networks (RCSNs) Annual Report provides a summary of recent activities initiated by WA's five RCSNs, and an overview of the GRDC's investment planning process for grains research, development and extension (RD&E)... High priority issues identified in 2014-15 by WA RCSNs include profitable rotations; subsoil constraints; acidity; herbicide resistance; nematodes and soil-borne diseases; canola and the need for better agronomic packages for this crop; frost; non-wetting soils; management of seasonal and soil variability; and business management...

When sampling for crown rot, growers and advisers should put in a 10cm length of stubble from the base of the plant and include the crown to the first node (discard material from above the first node)... Correct sample strategy estimates crown rot risk.. "The early results show this is a sampling issue, and that adding short pieces of stubble from the base of the plant significantly improves the detection of the Fusarium species that cause crown rot."..

Early prediction of soilborne disease could cut losses.. DAFWA project leader Martin Harries said soilborne diseases were a major cost to the cropping industry, estimated to cause losses in WA of about $100 million per year in cereals alone... "There is scope to reduce these losses through management actions - such as choice of crop type or application of fungicide seed dressings - if these pathogens can be more accurately detected and quantified prior to sowing," he said...

"If disease levels don't break down over the summer, crops will be at risk next year, especially if growers select new varieties that aren't disease-tolerant," said Mr Sonogan, who is also an agronomic consultant based at Swan Hill (Victoria)... PreDicta B samples are processed weekly from February to mid May ( less frequently at other times of the year ) and tests are for most of the soil-borne diseases of cereals and some pulse crops, including CCN, crown rot, rhizoctonia root rot, take-all, Pratylenchus thornei, Pratylenchus neglectus, stem nematode and blackspot... Having examined the roots of crops during the 2014 growing season, Mr Sonogan said he observed non-typical expression of CCN disease this year...

Soil monitoring important following fire.. Soils affected by fire can have their microbial buffer against diseases weakened... While some plant pathogens may be reduced following extreme fire events such as the Pinery fire in South Australia's lower north region last year, growers affected by fire are being urged to monitor nutrient levels and soilborne disease pathogens in the lead-up to and during the 2016 growing season...

Integrated disease management (IDM) practices, such as combining crop rotation with the use of fungicides, can minimise the effect of some of these diseases... If growing a leaf spot- and rust-susceptible variety in the Bundaberg area, it has been found that applying chlorothalonil products from 21 days after emergence (DAE) at 10-day intervals has controlled leaf spot and rust... If growing a more tolerant variety (i.e. Sutherland) apply a fungicide spray when leaf spot and rust is found on susceptible variety in the district and another 14-21 days later...
