Murray Bridge to host grains research Update.. Frost, in-crop herbicides, pastures, canola, top performing cereals and emerging commercial innovations will be on the agenda at the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) grains research Update at the Murray Bridge Golf Club... South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) researcher Andrew Ware will delve into plant development of canola under different sowing times and seasonal conditions, while SARDI's Rob Wheeler and University of Adelaide's Jason Eglinton will highlight the "best and fairest" wheat and barley performers in trials across SA in 2014...

Can wild chickpeas reduce the nematode problem in Australian crops.. A new international collaboration between Australia, the United States and Turkey is seeking to tap into the genetic potential of wild chickpea to create more resilient and nutritious varieties... For the Australian contribution to the project, researchers will be specifically interested in the genetic resistance of wild chickpea to the root-lesion nematode (RLN), a microscopic worm that feeds on and damages the roots of susceptible crop hosts, like chickpea and wheat, limiting the plant's ability to access soil water and nutrients, thereby stunting it growth and reducing yield...

ecogeographical data and developing a subset of a maximum of 30% of the original size through the proportional selection technique followed by using combined agro-morphological and ecogeographical data and maximising strategy... The overall objective of this project was to develop a method for identifying core collections of pasture (and ultimately grain) legume species using ecogeographical and molecular analyses... In 2006, following the outputs of the bladder clover core collection project, a research project proposal for developing a core collection in subterranean clover and QTL mapping of its genome for flowering time, disease resistance, leaf marks, isoflavones, and hard seededness was submitted to the Australian Research Council...

A project using a cotton industry model is improving understanding of canola crop physiology based on thermal time*... The results may allow growers to better time practices such as windrowing that influence yield.. Experimental results in the project showed that windrowing before these recommended guidelines can result in yield penalties of up to 100 kilograms per hectare per day and oil losses of 0.3 to 0.6 per cent a day...

Collective action can minimise barley disease losses.. "Strategies that can help minimise the risk of yield losses include destroying the 'green bridge' including barley volunteers and weeds (to reduce rust carry-over); using appropriate seeding strategies; monitoring emerging crops for signs of disease; and considering using a registered foliar fungicide if the variety is susceptible to the diseases found," Dr Jayasena said... "I encourage growers to monitor the early development of crops for leaf disease symptoms and to consider using a registered foliar fungicide if the variety is susceptible to the diseases found," Dr Jayasena said...

The benefits offered to agriculture with the renewable energy in Australia... The unit is estimated to produce around 210,000 KWh of electricity per year and with no anticipated environmental effects as this type of generator is claimed to be "fish friendly" allowing for migration of fish both up and down the Archimedes screw action... " The easiest way to show this is by the following simple graph that demonstrates that this increase in wind speed creates an exponential increase in energy...

Farmers must be valued for their skills as primary land managers... If we opened up the membership of our farming organisations in this way, but kept the decision base small so as not to become unwieldy or be overtaken by other agendas, I believe farmers would have more clout... I saw numerous examples in Europe of under utilized land going backwards due to the owners effectively being park rangers, rather than farmers...
